Soldier Boy's Valentine

"What?" Duo asked as they worked over a pile of bomb parts laid out on a tarp at the center of the safe house living room. Heero started, embarrassed, and then lowered his eyes to the work in his hands. Duo frowned and asked irritably, "You keep... staring. Why?"

"I was...," Heero began, but then frowned, changing his mind about whatever he had been going to say.

"Admiring my handsome profile?" Duo joked with a snicker. When Heero unexpectedly blushed, Duo exclaimed in surprise. "You were, weren't you?"

"Yes," Heero admitted.

Duo blinked at the quick admission, but then grew suspicious. "No you weren't, " he accused. "You're thinking about something. I can tell by the way you're scowling even more than usual." He motioned to the components. "Look, if you have any doubts about this mission, go ahead and say so."

"It's not the mission," Heero replied nervously. His hands began working on putting a bomb together once more as if he fully intended not to say anything else.

Duo stared at him and then exclaimed in irritation, "Hey, mystery man! We're a team, remember? Keeping things to yourself doesn't help us work together."

"It..." Heero stopped and cleared his throat. He tried again. "It doesn't concern our working relationship or... or the war. "

Duo barely hid a sudden look of anguish. He turned partly away, staring hard at one wall as if it had become very interesting. "Oh.... Uh... I guess I was expecting this.... I mean.... I never expected anything to start with, and I know how you are about the war, about being totally committed to it."

"Duo?" Heero replied, shocked by Duo's conclusion, "That's not-"

"It's okay, Heero," Duo cut over him. He took a deep breath and then let it out. He said, with forced nonchalance, "See? Over it already."

"I thought that you didn't lie?" Heero said accusingly and his expression went very serious.

"Not a lie," Duo hedged. "Just a way of thinking."

Heero put his half completed bomb aside. "I didn't realize that my feelings were so much stronger than yours," he said in a pained voice, "If you want to stop our relationship, if you think it is better that we go back to being just comrades, then I'll abide by your wishes."

Duo's eyes went wide. "No! that's not what I want!" he retorted, "I thought you- that you wanted-" Duo blew a gust of air through his bangs in exasperation. "This would be so much easier if you would just tell me what the hell you're thinking about, Yuy!"

Heero was suddenly shy. Very slowly, not looking at Duo, he took a small, silver stone from his pocket. It was rounded and smooth and a shinning, gold emblem had been embedded on one side. Almost reluctantly, as if he were afraid of the consequences, he handed the stone to Duo. Duo took it and looked at it, puzzled.

"So, what is it?" Duo asked.

"A gift," Heero replied in a small voice.

"Oh," Duo looked embarrassed. "Uh, what for?"

"Quatre received a gift of red flowers. He told me that Trowa had given them to him," Heero explained. "Quatre also told me that it was Valentine's Day and that you're traditionally supposed to give gifts to your love."

"Oh...," Duo said, and then with embarrassed agitation, "Oh! Well, jeez! I didn't get you anything, Heero."

Heero smiled. "It isn't necessary that you give me a gift... it was just... an impulse."

Duo looked at the rock in his hands and it was clear that he was feeling awkward. "Uh, thanks for the rock. What's this sign mean on it?"

Heero swallowed and then said something under his breath.

Duo leaned towards him. "What? I didn't hear you?"

Heero cleared his throat and tried again. He said, louder. "Beloved.... It says beloved."

"Oh," Duo blushed and then examined the stone more closely. "You made this yourself, didn't you?" When Heero nodded Duo said, "Well, since hand made gifts are okay, mind if I give you one?"

"No," Heero replied uncertainly. "I don't mind."

Duo smiled shyly and then he leaned even further and kissed Heero. It was firm and forceful. When he broke it, he looked at Heero nervously. "Okay?"

"If you wouldn't mind," Heero replied, face flushed and his heart in his blue eyes. "Could you make me another gift?"

Duo smiled with more confidence and suddenly he was sitting next to Heero and sliding arms around Heero's waist. Holding Heero tightly, he kissed him more deeply.

Breaking the kiss reluctantly, Heero said breathlessly, "That was an even better gift."

"Yeah," Duo chuckled warmly, "but now we aren't even. You'll have to make me another gift now, too."

They fell into another kiss and Quatre, watching them from the doorway of the kitchen, chuckled.

"What are you doing?"

Quatre started and turned to find that Trowa had come into the kitchen from another doorway.

Quatre blushed and moved to the kitchen table to finish arranging a vase of red flowers. "Oh, nothing," he replied breezily.

Trowa frowned, but then nodded at the flowers. "Where did those come from?"

Quatre shrugged nervously. "There were some growing wild in the back of the house."

Trowa came up behind Quatre and slid arms around his lover. Quatre smiled warmly as Trowa put a chin on his shoulder and said, "I wondered where they had gone to. I was going to pick them myself."

"Really, why?" Quatre asked in faked confusion.

Trowa smirked, not falling for Quatre's wide, innocent, blue eyes. "For you, of course, and you know it too. It is Valentine's Day." He sighed and reached out to touch a flower. "Now I don't have a gift for you."

Quatre smiled and turned in Trowa's arms. Locking hands behind Trowa's neck, he said, before pulling the taller young man down for a kiss, "I've heard that it's all right to make gifts..."
