Remembrances

"Is it a bomb?"

Duo rolled his eyes at Heero's teasing, in disgust, but he was staring at the large plexiglas display unit, in the rotunda of the museum, as if it just might blow them all up.

Heero stood by his partner and stared at it as well, as the children ran around them, playing an impromptu game of tag among the massive columns of the place. The gold, stylized plaque identified the contents.

"Better than the basement," Duo muttered, "but, still...."

"It's our due," Heero intoned, as if he were repeating a news vid copy. "To honor all who died and fought for the new government and the people of Earth and the colonies." He grimaced. "We're supposed to look at it and admire it."

"Our medals, parts of our Gundams," Duo recited from memory, "Stills, graphic displays of carnage, Even part of my substandard flight suit, to show just how dedicated we all were. The things were almost death traps, after all, with minimal shielding."

A harried teacher was trying to call the children to order, but they were ignoring her. A school field trip was a grand chance to have fun, after all.

"Everything that we sacrificed for, reduced to a nine foot display case," Heero sighed, feeling the injustice of it. "They could have had models of our suits or the enemy mechs."

Duo frowned and looked at the children, playing. "Why?" he wondered. He motioned to the children. "They grew up without war. Isn't that what everyone fought and died for? Isn't that what we wanted?"

Heero slipped an arm around Duo's waist and held him close. He smiled softly and nodded. "So,then," he said, "We're done here?"

"We were done six years ago, love," Duo replied. "Let's leave it in the past."

"They'll ask why we didn't look," Heero pointed out.

"The people that we fought with, won't ask, Heero," Duo replied as he guided Heero toward the exit of the museum. "They'll understand."
