Fake After the Manga series

A Fake Valentine

"Why are you bothering?" Ryo asked absently as he poured over a file on his desk.

"It's expected," Dee grumbled. Arms crossed over his chest, he glared at his partner over the expanse of their two desks. "We're married. Husband and-"

"You'd better say 'husband' in the next breath or you can plan on sleeping at your desk tonight," Ryo warned acidly.

Dee glared even more fiercely. "I was going to!" He shouted, but then visibly controlled his temper in the next moment and said more calmly, as if he were pointing out the obvious, "Like I was saying, it's what two people, especially two people who are married, do."

"What you're trying to say is, that it's expected?" Ryo asked in a flat, noncommittal tone of voice. He turned a page in his folder and managed to convey, in that one motion, what his voice refused to reveal, that he was bothered by something.

"Yes, expected," Dee affirmed. He was picking up on Ryo's body language, but he wasn't sure if it was the file or himself that was irritating his partner. He went on doggedly, "So, now that we've established that, do you want red roses, yellow, white...?"

"None," Ryo grunted and took a sip of his tea.

"Candy?' Dee suggested hopefully.

"No," Ryo replied shortly and pulled another file in front of him and opened it.

"Aw! Come on Ryo!" Dee swore in exasperation. "Make it easy for me! That stuff is traditional!"

Dark eyes lifted to regard Dee. "Have you given those kinds of Valentine gifts before?"

Dee hedged defensively, "Yeah, but not to anyone I cared about!"

Ryo's eyes grew intense and then they fell to the file in front of him again as he began to look at photos. "Exactly," he said stiffly.

Dee had the distinct feeling that he had just missed something. He ran a distracted hand through his dark bangs and tried not to let his hurt show. "You don't want to do this, do you?" he finally asked.

"Does that bother you?" Ryo wondered without looking up.

"Yeah," Dee replied, leaning his chin on one fist dejectedly.

"Why?" Ryo wondered as he stuffed the photos back into the file, closed it, and leaned back in his chair to regard Dee. "It's not like it's important to you. I'm saving you the trouble of getting the flowers and the candy."

"Trouble?" Dee scowled, his green eyes sparking. "It's not trouble!"

"Then what is it?" Ryo demanded hotly, taking Dee by surprise. "If you're just doing this because you're afraid people will think you're a jerk for not getting me something..."

"That's not it at all!" Dee exclaimed furiously, "I just wanted to show you that I loved you! I thought people did that on Valentine's Day by giving their lover's candy and flowers. If you don't want that then-"

Ryo opened a drawer in his desk and took something out. Very slowly, he produced a single, large, blooming red rose. He looked At Dee, his dark eyes full of emotion. "Idiot!" he growled. "Why can't you just say what you're feeling?"

Dee stared at the flower, dumbfounded. "That's for me?"

Ryo snorted humorously. "No, for Fred the Janitor."

Dee frowned. "He has been eye balling you lately..."

"Dee!" Ryo warned and then he looked around them. Almost everyone had gone to lunch. He stood and leaned over their desks, holding the flower out to Dee, but making Dee lean as well to reach it. He said very softly, "It's about love, not about doing what's expected. Got that?"

Dee took the rose, looking deeply into Ryo's eyes as he replied, "I think I do get it and, maybe, I've got something better than flowers and candy for the man I love."

"Would that be for J.J., then?" Ryo asked with mock seriousness.

"Don't ruin the moment!" Dee retorted. "That's not even the slightest bit funny."

"Sorry," Ryo chuckled. "So, what then?"

Dee kissed Ryo on the lips, passionate but brief. "Call Bicky," he said, "and tell him to have a nice slumber party with his friends tonight somewhere else besides the apartment. I think some champaign, some fruit and cheese, massage oil, mood music, and a very hard and ready lover can give you a whole new appreciation of Valentine's Day, Ryo."

"You're inviting Fred over, then?" Ryo asked, deadpan.

"Nobody's laughing here, Ryo!" Dee growled.

Ryo smiled, plucked the rose from Dee's hand, and stroked Dee's cheek with the soft petals. "Isn't it so much better not to do 'what's expected'?"

"Yeah," Dee agreed whole heartedly. He slid a hand behind Ryo's neck and pulled the man in closer. Not caring who was watching, he gave Ryo a very deep kiss. When he broke it at last, he whispered against the warmth of Ryo's blushing cheek, "Happy Valentine's Day."

Ryo smiled lovingly, "This evening, I think, it will be even happier."
