Ginji/Ban, Kazuki/Shido

Kindred

"You are not right for him," Shido growled. He was perched on the end of the bench, pointedly facing away from his rival. His eyes were watching a lone figure bounce a basketball off of a wall, over and over again, with single minded pleasure. The bird on Shido's shoulder, a dark crow, ruffled it's feathers and looked agitated.

Ban glared at Shido and the crow. Leaning back into the bench, his long legs were stretched out before him. His chin was resting on his chest, but his hypnotic eyes were turned to watch the lone figure as well. Catch, throw, bounce, catch throw, bounce. He snorted, wondering if Amano Ginji, the object of their regard, would ever tire. He replied, "He was never right for you, Monkey Trainer. You were forcing him to be what he wasn't."

"He had everything," Shido persisted, as if Midou Ban, his rival, hadn't spoken. "He was the Thunder Emperor and he ruled The Infinite Fortress. Everyone respected him. Because of you, he lost all of that and he let down the people he had always protected."

"He was living a lie," Ban growled. "That wasn't what his life was supposed to be." He looked contemptuous. "As for the people who thought that they needed his protection, I'm sure that they found someone else, or learned to take care of themselves. What are their lives worth if they couldn't do that?"

Shido did turn to look at him then, glaring fiercely. "Some people can't protect themselves, Midou Ban. If you knew what lurked in The Infinite Fortress, you wouldn't judge so harshly."

"Maybe," Ban conceded, intrigued by Shido's passion, "but then again, maybe I DO know what lives there."

"Then you have no pity," Shido snarled and the bird looked ready to launch itself at Ban. Ban only smiled and shrugged, unconcerned.

"Ginji is everything that you are not," Shido continued harshly. "You are a cold, calculating killer without a heart. You manipulate Ginji to your own ends. You no more care for him than a black widow spider does its mate."

""What does that kind of trickery get me?" Ban wondered. He sounded amused, but the amusement didn't reach his eyes. "What do I gain by making Ginji stay with me?"

"A friend where you never had any," Shido replied. "A bed warmer; certainly. Someone to do your dirty work in your foolish business; without a doubt."

Ban laughed outright then. "Listen, Monkey Trainer! Stay out of my business and Ginji's too, for that matter. I'm not going to discuss my relationship with him or tell you anything that you want to hear. I will only say..." he paused for emphases, leaning closer to Shido, "that you never had a chance with him and you never will."

Shido looked pained and angry at the same time. Birds suddenly flocked to every tree near them, cawing and flapping in agitation. "I should-," Shido began, but Ban stood and waved at the birds dismissively.

"You should know by now," Ban told him, "That you are not a match for me. Don't bring your 'friends' into this."

Ban walked over to Ginji and stood beside him, hands in his pockets as he watched the young man bounce the basketball. Ginji smiled at him, a smile that was bright and loving. So sweet and gentle, Shido thought. He was a lamb standing next to a wolf. Ban was a killer, pure and simple. He was a man who was completely heartless. When Ginji didn't suit him any longer, Shido was sure that Ban would toss him aside, if he didn't kill Ginji first.

Ban suddenly smiled. It startled Shido. The smile was warm, completely at odds with an expression that was usually as cold as ice. Ginji laughed and moved closer. Ban looked uncomfortable, almost shy. Shido stared in hurt and disbelief, as Ginji leaned in and gave Ban a quick, pure, innocent kiss on the lips. Ban ducked his head and pushed Ginji back, but the push was hardly that and Shido almost thought that it was more of a rough caress. Ginji laughed good naturedly, said something funny, and Ban laughed as well. Shido tried to remember if he had ever heard Ban laugh honestly, without a sneer or a mocking sound. If he hadn't, he was hearing it now. Ban's laugh was soft and reserved, but genuinely full of affectionate humor.

"I am usually the watcher," Kazuki said as he sat next to Shido and leaned against his warm side. The crow squawked in pleasure and Shido dragged his eyes away from the couple to look down at his slight companion. "Your eyes can see in the dark," Kazuki continued. "Can't you see what's before you in broad daylight?"

"I can see it," Shido acknowledged, "but I don't have to accept it."

Kazuki sighed. "Instead of 'The watcher' I suppose I shall now be 'The Waiter'."

Shido blinked at him. "What will you wait for?" he wondered. "For the Thunder Emperor to return home, as I do?"

Kazuki made an exasperated sound. "Men," he grumbled, but burrowed against Shido's side until Shido draped an arm over him, taking the hint that the slim, young man, wanted to be held.

"You aren't one?" Shido wondered sarcastically.

"I often wonder," Kazuki replied. "I don't seem to be afflicted by the blindness that many of them suffer from."

Shido frowned. "Speak plainly. I'm not in the mood for riddles."

"See?" Kazuki said, "Blind as bats."

Shido tightened his arm almost painfully. "Kazuki."

Kazuki squirmed and then relented. "All right!" He pointed to Ban and Ginji. Ginji now had the ball under one arm and they were walking away, very close and very attentive to each other. The rest of the world had ceased to exist. "Don't you see how much they mean to each other? Our Thunder Emperor is no more. Ginji is now irrevocably united with Ban. Can't I hope for as much?"

Shido scowled. "Are you hoping to find someone as cold and as heartless as Midou Ban to spend your life with?"

"No," Kazuki replied as he slipped a hand into Shido's, "but a man who is just as stubborn."

Shido stared, wide eyed, suddenly realizing the implications of Kazuki's words. He looked after Ginji. Ban had been right when he had said that Ginji would never be his. Shido had known that. It had been nice to be blind about that, to hope, but Kazuki had opened his blind eyes. He couldn't pretend that he hadn't seen. Maybe, he thought as he leaned down and saw Kazuki's love for him, it wasn't so bad to finally see.

The End
